Barack Obama made an unusual mid-summer campaign appearance for New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine, who is, Allah forfend, behind the Republican. The original caption reads: "U.S. President Barack Obama and New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine embrace after Obama spoke at a rally for Corzine in Holmdel, NJ, July 16, 2009." Yeah. Right. As if the word embrace didn't require mutuality. Have you ever seen anybody hang on for dear life like Jon Corzine in this photo?
You will disappoint me if you do not do better.
Corzine: I despise the way you pose yourself. You and your whole f---ing family.
Obama: We're both part of the same hypocrisy, Governor, but never think it applies to my family.
- with a wink to The Godfather, Part II
Corzine was at the Lincoln Center Otros Aires tango concert/dance the prior evening wearing a pinstriped suit. He's actually a pretty good dancer (no, I didn't dance with him).
He's got the follower's embrace with the right arm, but the handshake ruins it.
Readers may note the amazing similarity in the weirdly "imperturbable" expressions on Corzine's face, and on the face of Sammy Davis, Jr., from another well known non-mutual "embrace" photo, that one taken at the 1972 Republican National Convention, when the entertainer walked up and hugged Richard Nixon on the stage.
