The protocol thing

You can't make this stuff up. And, no, it is not at all the same thing as George W. Bush holding King Abdullah's hand. That's an Arab deal denoting friendship, not subjugation.

I repeat myself: When are American conservatives going to start chanting that tedious old lefty war cry, "Not in our name!"?

Probably not until the Obamas present the Ahmadinejads with the Persian-looking "American Girl" doll.

Come to think of it, that would be so funny it might actually make up for insulting the Brits.

As I always say, sometimes the comedy just writes itself.

By Anonymous DJ, at Fri Apr 03, 07:42:00 AM:

Oh come on. If holding hands denotes friendship what does a full on lip lock denote? Did Bush not subjugate himself when he puckered up for King Abdullah?

By Blogger Dawnfire82, at Fri Apr 03, 07:54:00 AM:

Who give a shit? Bush isn't in office anymore. Obama is.

If you can agree that Bush subjugating himself before an Arab monarch is bad, then surely you can agree that Obama doing the same is bad, right?

After all, you're not a hypocrite.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 08:02:00 AM:

Depends on whether as a man you'd prefer to bow before a king, or let his stinky lips meet yours. I know what I'd choose.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 08:26:00 AM:

You tell me. I've never kissed a man on the lips.

By Anonymous Gandalf, at Fri Apr 03, 08:48:00 AM:

Actually the empty suit just happened to buckle at the middle at that moment. Actually I am surprised he didn't turn around and buckle (after unbuckling) again. He must have been distracted again.

My guess is that there's a good reason for that, Anon at 8:26, yes? My point exactly.

By Blogger Georg Felis, at Fri Apr 03, 09:33:00 AM:

To make the insult to Ahmadinejad correct, we should have Ace present him with an anatomically correct Persian “American Girl” doll. Complete with commentary.

I’d pay money to watch that (with popcorn).

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 09:45:00 AM:

Isn't this just a case of a muslim subject bowing to a muslim king?

By Anonymous ralf, at Fri Apr 03, 09:47:00 AM:

Sorry, but I don't see a bow there - I see everyone looking toward something hidden from our sight angle by Obama's body. He's closest, and leaning over to look at it. Let's not be too credulous here.

By Anonymous Mara, at Fri Apr 03, 10:39:00 AM:

Tell that to the host of this blog. He's the one who raised the comparison in the first place.

To be fair, I've lost count of how many right wing bloggers throw in the line "can you imagine if Bush did this...." whenever they feel obliged to point out different treatment. The thing is Obama is maintining a near 705 rating while Bush languished in the low 20s for the last half of his presidency. Any wonder he got no respect?

By Anonymous BillT, at Fri Apr 03, 10:39:00 AM:

Sorry, but I don't see a bow there...

Neither do I. I see a curtsy.

Let's not be too credulous here.

Let's not be too blissfully in denial of the obvious, either.

ACORN took that poll, eh?

By Blogger TigerHawk, at Fri Apr 03, 10:55:00 AM:

Mara - on the comparison to Bush point, the point about the hand-holding was a response to various lefty blogs which have compared the bow to the hand-holding episode.

As for your point about the approval ratings, it is not entirely obvious that the difference in those ratings is unaffected by the different press coverage.

By Blogger D.E. Cloutier, at Fri Apr 03, 11:03:00 AM:

Re: Obama's approval rating

George H. W. Bush was at nearly 90 percent in the polls after the First Gulf War. He lost the next election.

By Anonymous Tripp, at Fri Apr 03, 11:27:00 AM:

Ferchristsakes. You guys will sttop--bow--to anything. If that's a bow, than I'll tongue kiss King Abdullah. It's clear he he dropped something. Check out the guy to his right. Is he bowing too?

Wasting posts on this type of crap, is really beneath you, Tigerhawk.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 11:35:00 AM:

OK, he's not Philippe Petain-- he's Gerald Ford. Progress!

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 12:09:00 PM:

OK. I was a 705 before I was 6.....what's the PROBLEM? I just saved the world, again, this week.

And yes, I AM keeping score. You'd messiah haters better watch out. I'm gonna GETCHA.

By Blogger MartyH, at Fri Apr 03, 12:10:00 PM:

Tripp-

Pucker up-I hear King Abdullah is a very passionate kisser.

You can watch the video on Hot Air. The guy to Obama's right is getting ready to shake Abdullah's hand and is halfway into his bow when Obama comes up. Abdullah of course forgets about the other guy and turns to Obama, leaving the other guy hanging.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 01:18:00 PM:

I'm sure we'll see this disgusting bow all over tomorrows newspapers. Oh wait...

By Blogger Christopher Chambers, at Fri Apr 03, 02:42:00 PM:

Maybe he just dropped a contact lense? LOL

really now--don;t you morons realize that regular people are laughing at your petty crap? Yes there's a chunk of miscreants who might eat it up rather than face real issues, but on the whole...I dunno. You might want to let this one go, like AIG

besides, I thought the Saudiis were close friends of folk like the Bushes and other red state oil folk? Why not bow? I thought a bow would give you that warm feeling of continuity?

Obviously they're staring at the guy bowing before the king

By Anonymous Beth Donovan, at Fri Apr 03, 03:22:00 PM:

LOL! Obama had to bow down because they dropped his teleprompter!!

That is a definite bow. No doubt about it.

Well said, Christopher! The Republicans have as much credibility as well, as the Republicans!!

LOL

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 04:35:00 PM:

Mr. Chambers:

1. You obviously have time to waste if you're hanging out with "morons" on this blog. Prey tell us where we can find smart people to hang out with.

2. Why resort to name calling in the first place? Isn't that part of the attractiveness of the "hope and change" president -- that we don't need to succumb to the tactics that made Bush 43 so unpopular?

3. I beg to differ with you on the coverage issue. Bush 43 was held to a much different standard. Had he bowed to the King or had he only entertained questions from selected journalists at a press conference, he would have been barbecued. I'm no fan of Bush 43, but I'm forever hopeful that we can get a balanced view from somewhere.

Mara: Just because someone has a higher public approval rating doesn't make the conduct appropriate. Bush 41 had about an 85% public approval rating after the start of the first Gulf War, and he was voted out of office less than two years later. Democrats should remember this, because the tides can turn quickly.

CC: Still a douche bag.

...

You know, I do get a warm feeling from continuity.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Fri Apr 03, 05:32:00 PM:

CC is hilarious. Here we have a video the President of the United States acting like a twittering, overdressed, over-impressed little suburban matron meeting a foreign nabob with a big credit card. The President falls all over himself trying to impress the credit card, trying way too hard socially, and CC has the twisted-up reaction (I can't call it thought, because I don't believe he thought this through!) to say "regular people" worry about our reactions! I'm peeing, I'm laughing so hard. No, dipshit, forget about bowing. In America, "regular people" could care less about the self-appointed king of the desert oil fields!

Obama looks ridiculous, and so do you for defending the indefensible! Get a friggin life!

What is it if not a full fledged bow? Maybe it is just a case of "bending over forward . . ."

By Anonymous Beth Donovan, at Sun Apr 05, 11:05:00 AM:

Actually, it must have been hard for someone with his head up his ass to pull it out long enough to bow to the Saudi king.

By Blogger Don M, at Sun Apr 05, 11:32:00 AM:

It is because it is in our name that Obama's errors, mistakes, and poor judgement is so offensive. A private citizen screwing up, well they embarass none but themselves.
