Good government initiative: We need Moammar Kadafi in New Jersey!
If you have ever lived in New Jersey, you know that at any level of competence the government is wasteful and complex. That is in no small part because of the encrustation of overlapping bureaucracies, municipalities, boroughs, counties, and free-floating "authorities" with conflicting or redundant jurisdiction over all aspects of life here. New Jersey government needs a bottom to top reorganization, which, sadly, is never going to happen because it would irritate the Sopranos.
So where does Moammar Kadafi, Libya's Great Leader, come in? Well, he's suddenly become an apostle of good government:
Leader Moammar Kadafi on Saturday called on Libyans to endorse his proposal to dismantle the national government and give the country's oil wealth directly to its 5 million people.
Kadafi has urged a sweeping revision of government bureaucracy, saying the whole Cabinet system should be dismantled to free Libyans from corruption and mismanagement. His plan has run into opposition from senior officials, who stand to lose their jobs in a government purge.
"Do not be afraid to take directly the oil money and the responsibility to create the right government structures that further the interests of the people," Kadafi told representatives of the country's Basic People Congresses.
Of course, we New Jerseyans do not have "oil money" per se, but we have a tax base that pumps out a gusher of cash, and would do even better if it were not for the hostility of the government toward employment. Indeed, the aggregate wealth of the Garden State's citizenry is much greater than Libya's oil money. Freeing New Jerseyans from "corruption and mismanagement" would certainly "run into opposition from senior officials, who stand to lose their jobs in a government purge," but it would make us all much better off.
Even Leader Kadafi understands that.
