Pithy comment of the day

I absolutely loved this:

There is no deeper class hatred in the US than that felt by those making six figure salaries toward those making seven. (And no greater delusion than the idea that those making five figures hate those making seven more than they hate those making six.)

In a word, indeed.

I'm not sure, but I think that the disdain held for those who feel that an Ivy League pigskin is a form of peerage within our egalitarian society must top this.
One can enjoy a libertarian disinterest in others' private property, join it with a non-command of materialism, and feel quite comfortable at any income level.

The H-bomb one is kinda silly.

Even we don't stock H-bombs anymore having given them quite a while ago. Its that inverse radius cubed relationship that makes ultra powerful bombs not so impressive in the real world. Plus, they're BIG, very big, which means big delivery systems, like bombers.

Taylor's smallest self contained fission device used about 2lb of plutonium and was smaller than a grapefruit ready to rock.

I don't think it is just amount of money, it is also the way that Other People make their money that torques some folks off. All those people "in trade," as they used to say. What right have they to make so much money? Any well-run society wouldn't allow it. Therefore, they conclude that America must not be well-run, and vote for change.

Assistant: Agreed. It isn't the money.

If one set of people - by race, religion, wealth, etc. - is perceived as causing unnecessary misery and impeding another then hatred will arise.

Demagogues know that and attempt to amplify that perception and benefit from the resulting hate.

Closely akin to those who promote hate are those who have figured out the universe, or at least mankind. They are Egotists.

They "know" what is best and how it will come about. They tell us solving man's woes will require sacrifices (from others) before the new Golden Age can be born.

The "haters" are simple folk tending to ascribe an innate inferiority to those they hate. Often they use mythology and cite past glories and sacred homelands. Genocide follows.

The "knowers" are more dangerous and the greatest among them is Marx, who explained the past, the present, and the world to come.
