Strange Times

With the collapse of Lehman Brothers over the weekend and the associated financial crisis that continues to develop with frightening speed and momentum, it would be understandable if you missed the news that Carlos Zambrano of the Chicago Cubs threw a no hitter last night against the Houston Astros.

The circumstances were unusual, as the game was an Astros home game but was displaced by Hurricane Ike to the Milwaukee Brewers' home park. Furthermore, Zambrano missed his last scheduled start after having a dreadful August and leaving his last game with arm pain. Cubs fans have been preparing for the worst.

This was the first Cubs no-hitter since Milt Pappas tossed one 36 years ago. The Cubs needed the win, and the lift of a strong Zambrano, having struggled a bit in recent weeks. The Brewers, their closest challengers in the NL Central, have also faded and Chicago begins the day with a 7 1/2 game lead, and a magic number of 7 to clinch the division.

The strange confluence of remarkable events on Wall Street and on the baseball diamond seems to lend support to a theory that is gaining currency (some say foretold by the Mayans) that the Cubs will in fact win the World Series this year for the first time in 100 years. But then the world will end.

Stay tuned....

I remember when Milt Pappas threw that no-hitter. 36 years ago? Yikes! I don't know about the Cubs getting through the crap shoot of the playoffs though. They have been struggling as of late. I wish them good luck.

As they are saying in the streets of Chicago..."It's gonna happen."
