Straight from the fever swamps

I hadn't seen a turd from Juan Cole recently:
What's the difference between Palin and Muslim fundamentalists? Lipstick. A theocrat is a theocrat, whether Muslim or Christian.
Except one of them has been just slightly more prone to supporting terrorism recently. He recites the usual list of Palin distortions (tried to ban books, tried to force teaching creationism) and, thus amplified, he is able to draw a tenuous comparison to the most moderate acts of Hamas and Saudi Arabia, conveniently ignoring the executions and stoning. How very..nuanced. "Help, I'm bein' oppressed!" Naturally, my self-righteous progressive acquaintances are mailing this around like it's a definitive takedown.

Muslim women wear lipstick?

How about, a burkha? Or, a vest of explosives? Or about 50 IQ points? Voting rights? Education? Freedom?

I am so offended at accusations that Palin tried to ban books when all she did was inquire into whether she could get the librarian to ban books. Not the same!

It is appropriate, however, that when liberals point to her support for teaching creationism, we should label that attempting to force teaching creationism, and then call it a lie because she only supported teaching creationism with forcing its teaching.

Makes sense to me.

Do you people seriously need the difference between 'banning books' and 'a library not carrying books' explained to you? Really? Alright then.

At my library when I was a kid, you could not find a copy of the Quran, or The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, or Josephine.

Those books were not banned. You were not subject to arrest for possessing them, they were not burned in the streets. They simply were not made available at the library in question.

And who makes the decision as to whether a city library will carry a certain book? Why, the city government. And who sits at the top of a city government? I think it's called a mayor.

Trying to cast this as some sort of anti-intellectual or bigoted jihad against 'book learnin' is flat stupid. If that were her motivation, why would she utterly fail to follow up at the state level?

Hmm? Anyone?

Visit LGF for the details on Palin and Creationism. Charles Johnson hates him some creationists, and did some research. You might not approve of what you find, Brian.

A bit OT and syntactically confusing, but I'll just support the aside. According to Factcheck:

" * Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to 'debate both sides' of the evolution question, but she also said creationism 'doesn't have to be part of the curriculum.' "

forced/allowed appears to be the distinction.
