Every time someone tells me they built their home and "we didn't need an Architect" I cringe a little inside. That's a little like saying you get your electrical wiring done by the Amish. There are many competent home designers who have less than the 7-9 years of college degrees and training required to be an Architect. However, lots of care needs to be taken in the design. When homes cost $10,000 it might have made sense to get get some plans and build, but something built right has a lot more value than something built cheap.
