Real time snowblogging

I'm in New Jersey where it is hot; this photograph was taken on a cell phone at Crater Lake, Oregon less than five minutes ago...

Up here in the Portland area we are experiencing Juneuary this year (snow at pass levels last night -3800ft). We're about ready for some global warming now!

It's flurrying at my house outside Seattle right now. (though melting on the ground) In the front yard, but not the back, oddly enough.

Looks like it was shot at the lodge, or perhaps partway around the southwest side of the rim. Did your correspondent say whether the rim road is open all the way around, or only on the west side?

I'm not surprised at all about all the snow there. The rim is as high as 8000 ft. in the high ground pictured beyond Wizard Island.

I've seen small patches of snow on the ground in in mid to late August on the northeast side of the rim even in mild years. But normally there would be a lot of bare ground around the lake even by mid-June (especially near the lake surface, which is only about 6200 ft.). Wow.

Stayed at the campground at Crater Lake in 1996. The neighbors milk froze on the picnic table overnight. It was August. And the snow was STILL 15 feet deep along the rim road.

Milk freezing in August at Crater Lake is normal. It's always cold at night up there (worst right at dawn when the wind starts blowing over the rim). 1995/96 and 1996/1997 were both very wet water years, so no surprise that there was a LOT more snow up there than in 2002 and 2004 when I was there.
