Scheiber plaintively asks: "What is it with these Canadians? Are they running some sort of entrapment operation up there? Why do they keep trying to torpedo Democratic candidates?"
1. They don't like protectionist rhetoric, especially in a time of rising commodity prices
2. Universal healthcare and drug price controls in the U.S. would make the Canadian healthcare system look substantially worse, eliminating their ability to send wealthy patients to the U.S. and having U.S. consumers subsidize drug R&D.
Isn't national self-interest the Occam's Razor answer here?

Bingo. And add this: If you are a freerider on national security, you want an American president who is going to spend enough on national defense that you can continue to ride for free.

And then there's protecting NAFTA, though technically the Canadians would like to get out of parts of that, specifically their agreement to control oil flow and pricing to the U.S.
