Evolution
Via Drudge:
The human race will one day split into two separate species, an attractive, intelligent ruling elite and an underclass of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures, according to a top scientist.
If you eat frequently at Applebee's, as I do, you definitely see a lot of dim-witted, ugly goblin-like creatures. So maybe he's right.

Channeling Herbert George Wells no doubt - the Eloi and the Morlochs from "The Time Machine". Later echoed in an episode of Star Trek whose title I can't recall at this hour of the morning.
Can't say I think it's total hogwash - could happen.

Well, this thread is beginning to sound like a bunch of elitist Democrats whose fine sensibilities are being offended by the physical appearances of a segment of Middle America.
We all have our esthetic prejudices.
Maybe I am more broad minded because I had to find dates at PU as an undergrad in the late 1970s (only four or five years after the first class of women to graduate), and, to put in in economic terms, market conditions were extremely unfavorable, particularly for underclassmen.
That said, I don't disagree with the gist of the thread!
But why, TH, would you go to Appleby's, when souvlaki at Hoagie Haven is available for take-out, or if you must dine in, I think PJ's (across from Firestone) still does a nice job?
In that market niche, on the road, I think I would stop at a Cracker Barrel before an Appleby's. But in my own back yard, I would try to frequent a locally owned place.

I seem to remember Sen. Daniel Moynihan [D-NY] getting into some hot water when he remarked that the perpetuation of an urban underclass, hereditarily supported by the government, exhibiting a generational lack of stable families, with a separating language, would lead to speciation.

Being a Westerner (i.e., western U.S.), I've long suspected a genetic divergence between those who, in the 19th and early 20th centuries, were willing to stay back east (especially northeast) and those who couldn't stand it, and moved west, often in the face of terrible hardships (and thereby, their respective descendents).
