Indicating patriotism

Under the headling "U.S. Patriotism Flagging," LiveScience reports that fewer Americans are showing their national colors than five years ago:

A new survey finds 62 percent of Americans display the flag at home, in the office, or on their car. That's down from 75 percent in August 2002, a year after the 9/11 attacks.

Further, those who say they are "very patriotic" slipped from 56 percent in 2003 to 49 percent this year. Interestingly, the number of "very patriotic" Republicans dropped from 71 to 61 percent, while the change for Democrats was significantly less...

The percentage of groups who say they display the flag, according to the Pew survey:

Whites: 67 percent
African Americans: 41 percent
Republicans: 73 percent
Democrats: 55 percent...

Bizarrely, the survey did not ask retired British pop divas whether they displayed the Stars and Stripes, when quite obviously they do:

So we know the survey's sample was messed up.

Flying a flag or having a flag decal will get your car keyed by some moonbat. Safer to just not do it.

The article is purposefully confusing "patriotism" with "support". After 9/11, most of the country dragged out their flags to show support for America and to act as a symbol of defiance to the terrorists. There was a famous before-and-after pic of some street somewhere, with the 'before' pic showing zero flags, and the 'after' pic showing the street just laced with flags. The people who later took their flags down weren't lacking in "patriotism"; it's just that the time for symbolism had passed, and it was time to go back to displaying the flag on appropriate days, such as Memorial Day, 4th of July, Flag Day, etc.

The reason I say "purposefully" is because LiveScience.com is a left-wing site hiding behind the cloak of science, much like Wired News and C-Net News hide their left-wing ideology behind the cloak of technology. If LiveScience can weave a construct that shows Americans are "less patriotic" (presumably because of Bushitler's unpopular war in Iraq), then they're going to jump at the chance.

As a quick example of their bias, they've always been real big promoting global warming hysteria, yet try to couch it in scientific terms. Currently on their site, you'll learn that the Antarctica ice sheet is stable. Thank Heavens! Here, look!

"An ice sheet in Antarctica that is the world's largest...poses no immediate threat, according to new research."

Whew! That's a relief! And there's more good news!

"The air over the East Antarctic ice sheet...will remain cold enough to prevent significant melting in the near future, the New Zealand-led research shows."

Whew, again! Looks like we're safe for another week!

But wait!

"But it eventually may become vulnerable to the effects of rising sea levels driven by the melting of other ice sheets, Mackintosh's team found."

And just what would those "rising sea levels" be?

"...with enough water to raise global sea levels by 200 feet."

So we're doomed, after all. Bummer. :(

I'll let you read one of their related articles, "Antarctic Glaciers Melting Rapidly" on your own. I just didn't have the courage.

I agree with Dr. Mercury's take. It strikes me as a survey designed to promote a viewpoint, reminiscent of the New York Time's "More than Half of All Women [aged 15 or over] Living Without Husbands for First Time."

"Lies, Damned Lies, and Statistics."

I leave a nasty note on the windshields of vehicles (usually pickups and muddy SUVs) with Confederate flag bumperstickers. I leave my phone number and email address in case the owner/driver wants to the discuss the matter. Did it all the time in Charlotte and strangely not one dickhead called or emailed, btut one lady who said she'd bought the car used and was in the process of scraping all that crap off. Now that's true patriotism. After all, flying that flag means you supported a barbaric, traitorous insurgency against the United States flag, right, fellahs? LOL
