"The Green Mountain Manifesto"

Apparently a document by this name actually exists, and seriously advocates the secession of Vermont from the United States:

"The argument for secession is that the U.S. has become an empire that is essentially ungovernable -- it's too big, it's too corrupt and it no longer serves the needs of its citizens," said Rob Williams, editor of Vermont Commons, a quarterly newspaper dedicated to secession.

"Congress and the executive branch are being run by the multinationals. We have electoral fraud, rampant corporate corruption, a culture of militarism and war. If you care about democracy and self-governance and any kind of representative system, the only constitutional way to preserve what's left of the Republic is to peaceably take apart the empire."

I suspect this movement could prove to be a source of division among Vermont's mosaic of ernest activists. For example, the Republic of Vermont will likely have difficulty funding health care for all, among other initiatives.

I think it's (1) not such a looney idea and (2) they will at least swallow their difference and keep a unified PR front. Look, a bunch of white people decided in 1861 to leave the union because they lost an election and wanted to keep black people as pets. In all southern states these clods are lauded as heroes and patriots. Many Eastern American states got their start as colonies started by people fleeing England for a variety of reasons, and no one jokes over that. maryland, Penn., Massachusetts all come to mind. Georgia was a welfare project. I think these folks in Vermont should be studied, not ridiculed.

Chris,
I suspect Vermont is less militarily equipped than the Confederacy.

Seriously, I suspect that once the ramifications of secession are examined-loss of agricultural subsidies being only one-even its backers will have second thoughts.

Yes, I think ridicule is appropriate in this case.

Passports checked on their daily commutes to Boston and NYC?

They've really thought this one out.

We separate California into north and south California and we now have fifty states again. Works for me.

Buh-by.

I give them 5 years of being on their own and the majority will petition to get back into the country. Or maybe they can join Venezuela?

To plow very old ground, I would simply remind one and all that the question of whether one or any collection of states has the right to secede from the Union was settled in the spring of 1865. Lincoln grounded much of his argument for pursing the War upon the denial of such a right. And that is why the "movement" in Vermont is fully deserving of ridicule.

I think this issue was settled in 1865. Since practically the only people in Vermont with guns are likely to be the stiff-necked red stater types who won't sympathize with the desires of a bunch of immigrant, flatlander socialists to depart the USA, I do not see much future for this secession movement.

Does Vermont get more in subsidies from the Gummint than the Gummint takes in taxes? I doubt it.

Hey I have no problem with their grievances but their redress is typical mumbojumbo from lefty retards who believe the force of their peaceful convictions alone will prevent NY, NH and MA from carving VT up before Canada can annex them. LMAO

This is a very interesting situation. A number of groups and states will be watching to see how this turns out. The country's atmosphere is very different from how it was in 1865. What would it say for our government should they not respect the will of its people in this decision? Would the people in Vermont be considered rebels?

Clearly, this movement for secession is on the right track, naive though it may seem to those with a level of intelligence higher than the people who seem to be able to only slam this idea. How does one create a PEACEFUL REVOLUTION from within this great country of ours. How does one effect a GRASS-ROOTS movement to promote change at the highest levels. How does one get through to these dunderheads in the halls of power that the people that put them there are dissatisfied with their performance. And do all this PEACEFULLY? This is how. do not be discouraged by the negative retiary remarks of nay-sayers. stay focused on key points. This Country must change, or dis-affect many millions more of its citizens. This Country must re-focus to serve the People, not the Corporations or the Special Interests. This Country must elect a leader with higher moral and ethical values than the DOGS we have been putting into office for the last 40 years. And then we need to elect a series of leaders with even higher moral and ethical values than he/she, until we, as a nation, hold the highest moral and ethical ground of any nation on the planet. Then, and only then, will what we say on the world stage, what we do as forign policy, have any real capability to protect and serve the People of the United States of America.

Now, back to why this secession movement is on the right track. Very simply, because it holds the higher moral and ethical ground. Little Vermont could not secede alone, for all the reasons noted by the nay-sayers. But Little Vermont does not have to do this alone. A groundswell of support for this movement for change can be present country-wide, in fact, is present country-wide. It just needs some cohesion, some charismatic leadership in each of the States of this great Country of ours, to push and prod the groundswell into a tidal wave of support for change. For those of you who can't think past the level of your second head, (the little one,)SECESSION is not the eventual goal, ATTENTION is. And GRASSROOTS support. And eventually CHANGE TO A HIGHER MORAL AND ETHICAL POSITION IN THE WORLD for our great country. That is the goal. Stay focused people.
