"Where do we find such men?"

Wow. Just wow.

There are men and women like this all over the world. They are just unsung or ignored or even despised if they are fighting a corrupt/greedy institution, an oppressive/murderous regime...or poverty or ignorance, disease. Then you have a whole next level of heroes and heroines who are holding down two jobs, taking the bus across town 90 minutes each way, and they do it dutifully for their kids.

So it's people who both literally and figuratively have looked up the barrell of a gun...and fight on...

Just a note: I believe the phrase originates in a James Michener novel, The Bridges at Toko-Ri, about the Korean War, made into a movie in the Fifties with William Holden. The actor Fredric March says this line in a speech at the end of the movie. March was a fine actor, and the line is true, and remains true. There is a truth about America that our current cultural elite cannot grasp, cannot even imagine anymore.

ZHOMBRE, shut your pie hole about this cultural elite crap. So what's the opposite of elite--mudsill? Jeez, I even remember when Reagan's folks denied stealing that crap from March. By the way, George Lucas stole the Bridges of Toko Ri strafing and anti aircraft fire scenes for the attack on the Death Star in the first Star Wars and proudly admitted it. The Gipper, as usual, tried to hide behind his loyal aides.

There are heroes all over the place, just as there are villians, fragile and brooding people. They were around long before America was born, they will exist long after America is dust. Don't let me catch your butt saying anything stupid again, or I'll send the cast of HBO's "The Wire" after you... ;-)

Did you even read the post to which you responded?

Zhombre said that the presence of such heroes among the populace was a "truth about America," that is no longer understood by a certain segment of the population. *cough*John Kerry*cough*

Then you, in a combative 'contradiction,' said "There are heroes all over the place, just as there are villians, fragile and brooding people. They were around long before America was born, they will exist long after America is dust."

How is that different?

And: "ZHOMBRE, shut your pie hole about this cultural elite crap; Don't let me catch your butt saying anything stupid again, or I'll send the cast of HBO's "The Wire" after you..."

Reasonable opinions are welcome in conversation. Intimidation and threats are not. Yes, even with a smily attached. But at least you've graduated from "I'm gonna teleport to your home and fight you" to "I'm going to pretend that I have the ability to send a troupe of actors after you." I suppose that's progress of a sort.

My dear Mr. Chambers, thanks immensely for the comment and the insight into your mind. To answer your question, the opposite of "elite" is "serial mystery novel scribbler." And if you don't shut your piehole, I'll send Titus Pullo from HBO's Rome to bust your chops in antique Latin style.

We all hope such a call never comes, but that if it is, we will be worthy.
