So, you coach Pakistan's national cricket team... Part II

Yesterday we passed on the news that Bob Woolmer, the coach of Pakistan's national cricket team, mysteriously died in his hotel room in Jamaica (where his team had lost to Ireland on St. Patrick's Day) just as angry mobs back in Pakistan chanted "death to Woolmer." Since we had nothing else to go on, our working theory was that Allah had more powerful mojo than St. Patrick.

Now it appears that human agency may have played a role.

When I saw Pakistan had lost to Jamaica, well, I could not help but remember previous gambling scandals that had embroiled sub-continental cricketing. I mean, Jamaica? I don't doubt that they play with passion, but in Pakistan, cricket is the only real sport. The Pakistan national team is one of the world's best. Jamaica is simply not in their league.

When I saw the news about Woolmer's death, it seemed far too likely that the two events were connected. As now sadly seems to be the case.

The Pakistanis deserve more than just skill from their cricketers; they deserve integrity. The Jamaicans will feel cheated, too; their victory rendered hollow.

According to news reports he was strangled. A murder investigation is now underway.
