Guess the criminal's name!

So, a man spins into a fit of rage and rips out his wife's eyeballs. She had the temerity, apparently, to ask for a divorce.

Consider the crime, and guess the bastard's first name. And, no, it's not Jack.

Answer here.

MORE: Regular commenter DEC has implicitly argued that this post is unfair. Filled as I am with the milk of human kindness, on extended reflection I think he's right. The criminal husband was not necessarily acting in accordance with some perverted version of ideological or cultural norms implied or suggested by his name. He might have just been a dirtbag.

And in Papua New Guinea, according to police, a former Bible student by the name of Steven allegedly ate three young women he had recruited as sex slaves.

Yeah, but he wasn't married to them.

Point taken, though.

What would his punishment in Morocco have been? In the west, acts of barbarity such as killing women, beating wives or as is this case, gouging their eyes out, are punished.

Here's another tale in the same vein that caught my eye today:

Christian teacher murdered by students at Muslim school in Nigeria

Descrating the Qu'ran, is it? Class of 1984 had nothing on these kids.

Meanwhile, non-Muslim Peul, Boko, and Baatonou people in remote areas of northern Benin practice infanticide. To many of those people, breech babies and certain other babies are witches or sorcerers. Some parents give those babies to executioners. Other parents abandon those babies in the bush.

Welcome to West Africa.

DEC, I do take your point - West Africa is a poor, undeveloped region with various groups of humans engaging regularly in behaviour considered repugnant in the west. Infanticide is an excellent example.

However, that's beside the point.

Students in a secondary school engaged in an examination in a religious instruction class should be sufficiently mature and educated to know that murder is wrong. The lynching of a teacher by a class of students for an alleged infraction of the strictures of a religion to which the teacher didn't even subscribe is indefensible. Murder is illegal in Nigeria and clearly the local authorities aren't standing idle, as the Nigerian Police are reported to have made arrests.

This kind of crime is, I submit, worthy of reportage and discussion, despite the surfeit of other repugnant acts either elsewhere in that region or elsewhere in the world.

For a number of years, an ongoing "war" has existed between mobs of Muslims and mobs of Christians in parts of Nigeria. One day Muslims kill 8 Christians. A few weeks later, Christians kill 32 Muslims. Both sides commit atrocities.

You certainly are welcome to pick sides.

Note to American Readers:

When overseas news media use the word "lynch," they mean "death by mob action without legal sanction." The mobs usually don't hang a victim by the neck. In West Africa mobs typically beat the victim to death or put a stack of old tires around him and set him on fire.

The Nigerian students reportedly beat the teacher to death.
