A glass-half-full man

The Chicago Tribune has a report on the world's biggest optimist.
You have to hand it to Neal Cotts for optimism. When the left-hander signed with the Cubs on Wednesday a clause was included in the contract for an extra $150,000--for World Series MVP.

Of course, the Cubs haven't won a World Series since 1908 and haven't even been to one since 1945, but Cotts knows a thing or two about long shots. He played a key role in 2005 as the White Sox won their first Series since 1917, winning Game 2 against the Astros.
After last year's disasterous episode in the muli-generational tragedy that is Cubs baseball, Cubs fans everywhere hope Cotts collects his bonus.

The expected value of this clause is about $0.15. The Cubs' chance of winning the WS is about 1:10,000, and the chance that Cotts would be WS MVP in that case is 1:100 at best.

Indeed. I'm not sure why his agent didn't try to get $1 million.

Does Cotts get the payoff if he is traded to a team that actually does play in and win the WS?

Boy would I love to see his faith justified this year.

The Cubs were my nephew Tommy's favorite team. He was an avid baseball fan and followed them faithfully despite their record. Thanks TH - I'll be watching for him.
