Fox night on 60 Minutes

Probably because it followed a very exciting football game, we watched 60 Minutes tonight for the first time in many years. Between the almost sympathetic interview of President Bush and the segment on the Duke (non)rape case (which, among other things, did not reflect well on the alleged victim's supporters in the African-American community), it was not exactly traditional CBS fare. It was almost as though Fox had taken the show over for one special evening of fun.

Glad you watched it, everyone else was watching 24, so it was nice to have a report on 60 minutes. :)

TigerHawk I could not agree more. It was almost as if CBS was trying to reach the NASCAR Dads via the NFL football fan. I like President Bush because he is a man of principle, however I have a very difficult time watching him communicate. I thought he was the most candid and non-scripted he has ever been. I am sorry to disapoint the left on this one, but you dont get through a top prep school, Yale and then Harvard B-School on bullshit alone. I think tonight was one of the first times I have seen him speak where I actually feel that he went to all of those schools.

As for the Duke story, I was thrilled to see that the parents of these young men were finally heard. If I were Mike Nilfong, the Durham City Council and Duke University, I would look to settle the inevitable civil suites sooner rather then later and chalk it up to the cost of being politically correct.

CBS making a sympathetic portrayal of its arch enemy? Reflection badly on the civil rights mafia? This is not a change of heart. They did this for the same reason the ACLU occasionally defends the KKK or the American Nazi Party- so they can say they are fair and balanced.

Fair and balanced? Oh, I guess they are like Fox.

It has been noted by those who have met President Bush in small, intimate settings that he is an intelligent, thoughtful, and, yes, erudite man. Like many of us, he might have some difficulty with the glare of the national media spotlight, where his ability to empathize and exchange thoughts is severely constrained. The pity is that his media advisers have not created more frequent situations with the national media that would allow the true man to be revealed. This is a common lament that has been noted almost from the beginning of his presidency.

After watching it, you'd think W should go on 60 minutes once a week for five minutes. Give them an exclusive. Call it "A question for the President."
In this setting, he can handle the toughest questions one at a time. Get them out of Washington. Invite them to Crawford, Camp David, or wherever the President might be travelling. No matter how hard he tried, Scott Pelly couldn't be snarky. Let the Democrats put Dick Durban on, or Joe Biden. The contrast couldn't be more stark.

I have not watched any news for years and have not watched 60 minutes for even longer

I dunno...Fox night on 60 Minutes implies that Fox...uh...has a "point of view." Slant maybe? LOL Every now and then the other channels have to toss a ragged bone to you right wing doggies as a ratings ploy. No one bought it.

CC - the idea that Fox is neutral and the others slanted would also fit with the host's comment. You draw an unwarranted conclusion.
