A river in Egypt
The most amazing thing about this is that anybody smart enough to work for a respected newspaper is dumb enough to say this. The fact that a whole room of such people are unwilling to countenance even the mildest truthful observation about Islam can mean one of only two things. Either these people are afraid -- and unfortunately they have good reason to be afraid -- or they are racist. It is extremely difficult to imagine a third explanation.

Even if the comment about Islam is untruthful - does that mean that speech must be shut down?
'Free speech' does not mean freedom for the truth only. The marketplace of ideas must be open to even the most idiotic statements, such that real debate and education can take place.
After all, who gets to decide what the approved 'truth' is, anyway? I am sure that the narcissistic leftist (redundant?) Madeleine Bunting would gladly have herself appointed censor of all proper viewpoints.
For our own good, of course.
Ken:
The media controls what message gets out. That is the problem. Freedonm of speech only works if the media provides a variety of views. This they choose not to do. No wonder so many of the population wants to get out of Iraq. They react to what they see, read and hear.
You can argue that the media has the right do what it wants but without variety there can be no freedom of speech.
I'm dismayed that you fell into the all too common trap of "Islam + racism". Islam is not a race, as you well know, and to allow anyone to equate racism with a religious choice is to let yourself to be played for a fool. Having said that, please continue on with your good works.

I am not so sure that the charge of 'racism' can't stick here, rws.
Islam is associated with certain ethnic groups and not others. It is a fact that Islam is associated with Arabs, for example, but not the Irish.
I for one consider the all-too-common Muslim hatred of me personally simply because I am an American to be a form of racism.

...and to allow anyone to equate racism with a religious choice...
What's your explanation for the Dar Al-Harb/Dar Al-Islam and Dhimmi distinctions made by the Koran then?
I eagerly await your spin.
