An American officer talks to CNN
Via Power Line, CNN interviews American Air Force Major Eric Egland. The interview is interesting for two reasons. First, Maj. Egland offers a strong and articulate sound-bite defense for the value of a "forward" strategy against terrorism, something that we also support strongly. In addition to that, though, I was struck as I watched Maj. Egland and his wife -- who is an immigrant from Poland, apparently -- how quintessentially American they both are. When I read that sentence back it sounds goofy, but I think if you watch the video you will understand what I mean. Their optimism makes me smile.

Great interview - the best explanation yet of why we need to be fighting the war over there rather then here. Two comments come to mind when I hear Major Egland speak:
1) What credibility he has in speaking about taking the fight to the bad guys. He is dead on with respect to taxing their limited resources (see TigerHawk's earlier blog on the failure of Arab/Muslim countries to thrive.) In some respects the longer we can keep them fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan the better we can build our own security infrastructure in the United States.
2) It is truly a shame that more of these great stories are not told. I yearn for the days when the state deparment or the department of defense would edit/censor all stories from the front. Stories like Major Egland's would be the norm, while the constant barrage of bombs going off throughout Baghdad would be put in it's proper perspective. Where we would not use such glorifying terms as "Insurgents" or "militants", but rather call them what they are Terrorists or better still "bags of dung..."
