Niall Ferguson imagines what would have happened had the jihadis blown up those aircraft flying from England to America. It would have been a disaster, in no small part because of the likely very different reactions in Britain and the United States.
hysteria would take over.
my guess is that the liberals and the conservatives would finally unite on the subject of the ME. followed by a major offensive over there. possibly the use of a nuclear bomb.
..it wouldn't be pretty.
the shock and awe routine would probably be throw out the door.
depending on the number of innocents murdered, people just wouldn't care anymore about the innocents "over there".
Perhaps the "next atrocity" will allow us to unveil economic sanctions, excluding all Muslims from traveling around the globe on any Western carrier - planes ships, trains, buses, etc. - until they rot in their own sh*tty nests.
Our family just cancelled a mid-Sepyember trip to Europe due to the travel uncertainty. The thought of being cannon fodder for an upcoming world war didn't appeal. However, I believe Niall is short-changing the Brits. It took them a while to cotton onto the proper picture before WW2 and they're just as obtuse now. However, as before, the picture will change precipitously for the minority Islamists and Red Ken and his crowd just as the pro-appeasement and pro-Nazi crowd in pre-war Britain were overwhelmed. It didn't happen with the dismantling of Czechoslovakia but Poland changed everything. I believe that another calamity will galvanize Western peoples to the threat. As history shows, it's too bad for all of the innocents until then and when the real war begins.
Recently consulted for a Phd, Princeton (Polisci), MBA Standford guy adopted from China by parents themselves Chinese-American immigrants.
Every incident leads him to buy more gold, store more food and further armor-up.
When each of his four kids graduates from Karate school, they get instructor trained in the use of weapons, and receive their own piece.
He also has a real hard-on for China.
Otherwise he's a particularly charming and really intelligent fellow.
