Juan Cole moral equivalence watch
Juan Cole is in stomach-turning form this morning:The difference between Ahmadinejad and Olmert is that the Iranian president is a blowhard. The one who had practical plans to wipe a country off the map was Olmert.
Of course, Omert's country was attacked, and Ahmadinejad's country supplied the weapons that sustained that attack. Had Hezbollah not fired those weapons, there would be no war today. Ahmadinejad's plans may be ineffective and incompetent and therefore not "practical," but they are quite obviously plans.

Cole reveals himself as being unserious.
He's serious as a heart attack -- he just works for the enemy as a propagandist.

Buckley once noted that getting an elderly woman out of the way of an oncoming car and shoving another one in front of a bus are not the same thing just because they both involve pushing old ladies on the street.

The Lebanon governments supplies an almost daily map of the Israeli attacks. So far the damage is close to $3 billion dollars and it looks much more like an attack on Lebanon and not Hezbollah.

Gary,
What on earth do you expect? Hezbollah is launching missles into Israel from Lebanon. They are hiding among the women and children of Lebanon. Where is Israel supposed to attack if not in Lebanon? The destruction of Lebanon is directly correlated to Hezbollah's ability to hide amongst the civilian population.
There is no other answer than to attack to diminish Hezbollah's strength. They have passed the point where Israel can continue to say, 'Thank you sir, may I have another' to every attack.
I think the Iranians may need Juan Cole's help translating their language into English, look what that billboard in Tehran says in English in the bottom left corner:

I'm sure it is a completely innocent mistranslation. It is probably just some medieval Persian poetry or something.

Gary,
Unless the map or photo is at the house-by-house level (as some photos are), and is accompanied with data on what was in and near each house before its attack, it cannot even theoretically support the claim that "it looks much more like an attack on Lebanon and not Hezbollah."
Hezbollah is in Lebanon (and hiding in civilian areas). To premise an argument on the idea that it is possible to fight Hezbollah without destroying buildings in Lebanon is as asinine as claiming that D-Day was an unwarranted attack on Normandy beach-cliffs.
juan Cole is an unserious man whose prestige is derived from his association with a great university(Go Blue),ot from anything he has done.It is troubling he as hired in the first place, but, let's face it,this si not a prstige department.(And becoming less so with people like Dr. Cole.)I do think a psychological profile would be fascinating, because he seems to delight in saying shocking things,(Or maybe he's just stupid)

Al Qaeda might have bombed the wrong Cole.
Seriously, who are these pompous windbags who try to seize a mantle of legitimacy from the pulpits of serious-sounding organizations that obviously are built on a foundations of Silly Putty and the old funny papers?
What's even scarier are the folks who read him and post comments. My guess is that the collective group's favorite personal possession is an umbrella.
