Hooters, melons, gazoombas, and, er, flak jackets?

Best of the Web has identified a heretofore unappreciated personal security device:

Top-Notch Protection

"An Israeli woman's breast implants saved her life when she was wounded in a Hizbollah rocket attack during Israel's war with the Lebanese group," Reuters reports from Jerusalem:
Doctors found shrapnel embedded in the silicone implants, just inches from the 24-year-old's heart.

"She was saved from death," said a spokesman for Nahariya Hospital in northern Israel.

This prompted the following comment, from reader Mark Schulze:
Yet again, the Bush administration has sent our troops in without the equipment needed to protect themselves in battle. Why aren't these being issued to our women in combat?

In fact, this is another slander against the president, as this Reuters dispatch from 2004 notes:
A group supporting natural breasts staged a small street protest in Hollywood Wednesday against a U.S. military policy offering free breast implants to female soldiers.

The group, led by porn star and former California gubernatorial candidate Mary Carey, said the military should spend its money on "bullets, not boobs."

"I think girls should have natural boobs and natural beauty," Carey said after unveiling her own breasts in the protest at an Army recruiting office on Sunset Boulevard.

We're all for natural beauty, but that doesn't help you much when you're dead, now does it?

A side note... My understanding is that the implants are free to female soldiers for the express purpose of teaching the procedure to military surgeons that otherwise would find it difficult to get that experience. It used to be that female soldiers and military dependents who required a mastectomy had extreme difficulty getting implants in military facilities covered by military health plans. Someone needs to inform this activist group that the free-boob policy is not just a questionable perk, but happens to be aimed at *restoring* the natural boobs and beauty of cancer survivors.

(Now, I can't imagine why you'd actaully want bigger bouncier breasts as a soldier, but that's a different story. Personally, if I had to be at that level of fitness, I might seriously consider a reduction...)

Hmmm, Interestingly enough, this has vast possibilities for wartime applications.
For instance, it would relieve the need to carry the weight, and bulk of canteens, or with a few mod's...Gas cans, and I.V. units, thus leaving room in the 40-70# field packs for more ammo, or cosmetics.
Going further into the subject, an additional pair might be fitted to the back side for extra cargo space, and protection if attacked from behind.
Come to think of it...perhaps male soldiers could be outfitted the same way.
Not only would that provide extra protection, but make it more likely that they would be taken prisoner..hmm?

Interesting, I never heard of this protest...

"I think girls should have natural boobs and natural beauty," Carey said after unveiling her own breasts in the protest at an Army recruiting office on Sunset Boulevard.

I think most of us vets, soldiers, sailors, airmen, and marines would be proud to say that we were willing to risk our lives so that she could orchestrate this powerful display of First Amendment rights.

It almost brings a tear to my eye.
