The perfidy of the United Nations 


David Kopel examines the track record of the United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon, including particularly their willingness to ignore Hezbollah kidnappings in return for bribes.

The United Nations recruits staff and soldiers from corrupt societies, gives them diplomatic immunity, and removes all political accountability. I cannot imagine why anybody would trust the United Nations to do a damned thing, much less "keep peace." There should be no U.N. peacekeeping force without weapons and rules of engagement sufficient to enforce the rules of any negotiated cease fire. Otherwise, it provides a screen behind which criminal governments and just plain criminals can prepare for their next war. The United Nations is a device for diffusing responsibility, not taking it.
