Before you buy a DaimlerChrysler automobile...

You should decide whether you want to do business with a company that mocks the United States in its advertising.

You're starting to sound chauvinistic, Tigerhawk.

I am American. I am not a liberal. I am not a conservative. I have tried many brands of automobiles and researched every new purchase. In the end, I find that American cars are crap. The silliest things break on them - constantly. Never happens with Japanese cars (my own experience and observing the fates of all I know). The conclusion - American cars are poorly designed, and constructed, and break all the time. I think the advertiser should win praise for being brave enough to say it clearly to the consumers. Detroit is not dying because of a conspiracy. It is dying because auto makers around the world are running rings around them.

I should also add that I don't consider German cars to be much better than American cars (I used to, but see far too may Mercedes and BMW's dead on the road).

Nevertheless, the point is the same. Let's not make automobile quality an element of patriotism. We, the consumer, like to buy cars that work - no matter from whence they come.

I agree that GM, Ford and Chrysler -- the American half of DaimlerChrysler, by the way -- have designed some cruddy cars. But many of the so-called "foreign" cars you see on American roads are actually built in the United States. Also, plenty of cars with "foreign" marks are owned by American companies (Jag-ew-are, and Mazda, for example).

In any case, as between my post and the DaimlerChrysler ad, which is more chauvenistic? Unlike DaimlerChrysler, I did not make any general statement about the country.

Now, if you are referring to my snarking on the Dutch today, that I will concede...

i concur, my wife had a 2002 focus when we got married, and it was a true lemon, for some reason it had the same issues that the 2000 and 2001 foci had, but the 2002 wasn't covered the recall warranties.

to be honest, the fact that many american car companies are still selling giant SUVs which get 12 miles to the gallon is a bit of a mocking of our entire situation.

fun post though, tiger

Wasn't that a Dodge Durango I saw pulling your horse trailer ? Not that there's anything wrong with that...
