Hamas and belly-dancing

Palestinian blogger Haitham Sabbah thinks that Hamas is going to going to fail in the long haul, at least as a majoritarian force among the Palestinians. The proposed regulation of belly-dancing -- apparently there are a lot of Russian belly-dancers in Egypt who go to the Palestinian territory to perform [who knew that? - ed.] -- is Sabbah's foil:

Let me tell you something guys. If Hamas is going to fail (and they will) and get kicked out of office, this is how it is going to happen. Their stupidity and the internal condemnation of pissed enough Palestinians. Palestinians are a famously liberal and secular group of Arabs, and after all this, the vast majority remains so.

I hope that Mr. Sabbah is right, for the sake of his country and security in the region.

Reminds me of Communist East Germany and its relationship with the west Germany. The East Germans knew about the wealth and social mores of the west in relation to their own situtation. In the end, the choice the east made was quick and easy. The government imposed restrictions on speech and social activities quickly went away with true freedom.
