Rate the color scheme!
Any number of people have suggested that the sheer ugliness of this blog limits my audience. Probably true, but the tackiness is also part of the brand identification. Surely we have the most poorly designed well-known blog in the entire 'sphere. That has to count for something...
Still, we are not against rearranging the deck chairs from time to time. So, what do you think?
UPDATE: Judging from the comments, the early returns are not good! Of course, I am sort of stuck with black, orange and yellow and my HTML skills aren't really, er, skills, so we have those limitations to deal with. Maybe I'll try to sweet-talk Cassandra into helping me out...
Keep those comments coming -- they are nothing if not hilarious -- and I'll try something else later in the weekend.
More UPDATE (12:30 pm Saturday): I have heard the Great Unwashed. I have reverted to the old format, with some tinkering.

Oh, WOW, maaan, I thought I was having a '60's flashback!

It's an attention grabber, that's for sure.
Not as boring as my blog.

UUUUUGGGGGGLY. Looks like someone threw baby shit all over the screen.

It has possibilities Tigerhawk. I think I could get used to it.
However, my first reaction was "Hey, is Andrew Sullivan guest blogging?"
Ow!!! Dark backgrounds with ligh-coloured letters are a headache-inducing combination. Try to invert it: pastel-coloured BG and mid-sized, very dark lettering. Nothing fancy (no patterns, no funny fonts).
And, oh, keep up the good job: your content is what matters, and it is excellent
Yeah - your content is what matters - but I can't read it without getting a headache or overriding your style... yuck.
, atI've always thought that your blog was one of the best designed out there (until now, that is). Minimalism is in. It's terrible when the design of the site takes away from the content.

TH, this...is...unforgivable :D
Seriously, if you'd like to redesign your site and you're not in a hurry, I'd love to work on it (and keep the colors, by the way - I like them!) But I think the design could be updated. For that matter my own site could use a facelift big time.
But this black has GOT TO GO.
Too funny.
TH, what drugs have you been taking? It's bad enough to have a weather-induced headache with the fronts coming in, but then when I looked to this blog for some sustenance, it almost caused a seizure. For right now, you're kind of the heavy metal righty blogger candidate of the year. What's next, Guns 'N Roses music will start to play when we access the site?
Flatulent Old Grad

I likes!
Does the fact that I'm red-green color blind have any relevance to the favorable opinion?
E' il bottone rosso o quello verde che disinnesca la bomba?

Awful. Proof positive I lean toward conservatism: I liked the old format.

I've always liked the simplicity of the blog. If you're looking to liven it up, try adding more images to your sidebar or maybe go with a 3-column template. The color scheme was fine before, it's more the layout that needs work.
I can't read black background blogs, my eyes dance around the page or I get a headache.
I don't know why.
My two cents...

Go Steelers...where's my terrible towel?
, atNew colors suck. The yellow type is hard to read.

Absolutely unreadable! Worse than Andrew Sullivan! Your original layout is good: clean, quick, easy to read. Dark backgrounds are a serious no-no.
Examples of decent clean layouts are michaeltotten.com, and the Wordpress K2 theme.
If you want to switch to Wordpress I'll help get it done.

All we need now is some Diablo fires, MIDI sound effect, an Angelfire address, and blinking text and we'll be back in 1997.

Thought it was just my 97 Gateway with AOL 7 dial up playing trips.
GO BACK TO NORMAL, PLEASE.
And as my grandson attends Princeton, I loved the original.
"Baby, come back!"
