Cool parents or nerd parents?

We are hosting a squad of 9th graders on the occasion of my son's birthday. The entertainment for the evening was "Shaun of the Dead" a hilarious romantic comedy involving, er, zombies. The night's activity is a marathon session of Dungeons & Dragons, which has been going strong for four hours and probably will not wane until three or four in the morning. If not six or seven.

So, does this evening make us "cool parents," or "nerd parents"? Or maybe we're "cool nerd parents." That last seems the most likely.

Don't, by the way, fail to miss "Shaun of the Dead". It's frackin' hilarious.

I'm pretty sure it makes you cool parents of cool nerd kid.

And Shaun of the Dead is totally frackin' hilarious.

I loved Shaun of the Dead too - it was totally wacked.

I think "cool parents" would be the correct label. I started with my daughters friends 15 years ago playing "Battletech". As the younger ones grew up we moved to different games. In the computer world we live in today many kids crave the human interaction of a good game with people, in the same room. "Nerd parent" is too negative a label for someone spending so much time getting to know their kids and their kid's friends.

Well it depends. Were you Dungeon Mastering the game? As a 26 year veteran of many games (both sides of the table) with a 17 year old child playing also, I would say without reservation that D&D players have much better conflict resolution skills and problem solving skills than the world at large. After all, if you can convince the Ogre that you are there to fix the drains, or cross the lava pit with only a disassembled wagon for parts, asking the Boss for a raise is easy :)
