Annals of numismatics: Another big media lie

So, I'm scrolling through the Yahoo! news photos of the day and I encounter this picture of a pile of the new "full frontal" Jefferson nickels, a topic on which I have written before (in connection with an extended rant about putting dead presidents on our coins).

My problem? The farookin' caption:
A pile of redesigned nickels are on display Thursday, Jan. 12, 2006, at the U.S. Mint in Washington.

Er, as every coin collector knows, there is no U.S. Mint in Washington. Philadelphia, Denver, San Francisco and West Point (sort of), yes. Of old, there were mints in Carson City, New Orleans, Charlotte and Dahlonega. But there are no mints in Washington, and never have been. Only the director's office is there, as it has been since 1873.

Sheesh. If the MSM can't even figure out where the mints are, how are they ever going to find Iran's nuclear weapons program?

According to Wikipedia, there was also one in Manila to make the local centavo coinage.

BTW, you make the point that the D.C. office does not make coins. Don't people still refer to it as the "Mint"?

"People" may, but we numismatists do not. It is merely the headquarters of the department.

Cool point on the Wikipedia entry -- I did not know there was a U.S. Mint in Manila. Awesome.

In case it isn't clear, BTW, this post was meant as a goof.
