The Stones can still bring it

The Stones came to Charlottesville, Virginia last Thursday, filling Scott Stadium to capacity, and of course I went because it is the biggest thing to hit town in years, and everyone was going. Despite the bomb scare that halted the show for 45 minutes, it was a pretty good show. Within minutes of tickets going on sale last May I logged into Ticketron and put in a request for the best available seats, and so ended up in the upper deck. But no matter. The enormous set made everyone feel close, and the presence of the band could be felt even in the upper regions.

And what a show! If you're still touring in your mid-sixties, as the Stones are, you'd better go pretty light on new material and stick to the classics, and they did not disappoint in this regard. Their playlist for the night included the following (not necessarily in this order):

Honkey Tonk Woman
Jumping Jack Flash
Ruby Tuesday
Get off of my Cloud
Sympathy for the Devil
Midnight Rambler
Brown Sugar
Paint it Black
Shattered

They even added a special song for this date, dipping into Exile on Main Street to bring forth Sweet Virginia, a nice touch. For the encore, they came out with You Can't Always Get What You Want, and ended with Satisfaction. The new material they played didn't make much of an impression on me; I listened carefully but never heard the words "sweet neocon," which was a relief.

I'd never seen the Stones live, and probably never will again, so I'm glad I made this one. They remain a great rock and roll band.

So Mick didn't bust a colostomy bag on stage? Keith Richards didn't set his oxygen take on fire with his cigarettes? Those guys do rock! Geritol shots for everyone! Sorry, couldn't resist.

Actually, Keith Richards looked very close to death, truth be told, and possibly on the wrong side of it. Mick, however, is a machine, a freak of nature.
