Blog-blocking in the Emirates

Gulfnews.com reports that the United Arab Emirates is blocking blogs. The censorship may be backfiring.
The blocking of a popular blog in July, has brought a new sense of community to UAE's blogosphere, say UAE bloggers.

While bloggers say there is "some paranoia" since the blocking of Secret Dubai Diary, the incident has sparked new interest in blogs and strengthened connections among bloggers in the country.

Authoritarian governments confer legitimacy on speech by banning it. For that, the Secret Dubai Diary should be thankful.

CWCID: The Emirates Economist, who got an honorable mention from the Gulf News.

UPDATE: John Chilton, the Emirates Economist himself, notes in the comments that the Gray Bitch has picked up the story.

Love "grey bitch"!

I did have to click on link
to verify that you meant
the entire NYT and not just
the redheaded (could be bottle), cat suit wearing,
cauldron stirring bitch.

Go TIGERHAWK!

I wish I could take credit for it, Larwyn. Got it from this guy. Counter Trey is a regular commenter here, as well.
