The Mindset of a Suicide Bomber

Powerline pointed me to this remarkable article from the Times of London, an interview with a young man who had embarked on a suicide mission which he had survived. It is worth reading in its entirety for many different reasons, as it dispels certain misconceptions and clarifies things of which you might not think.

One line in particular which caught my attention, however, is a blockbuster (at least to an American person who also happens to be Jewish).

I was told that to be accepted for a suicide mission the volunteers had to be convinced of the religious legitimacy of the acts they were contemplating, as sanctioned by the divinely revealed religion of Islam. Many of these young men had memorised large sections of the Koran and were well versed in the finer points of Islamic law and practice. But their knowledge of Christianity was rooted in the medieval crusades, and they regarded Judaism and Zionism as synonymous.

Many in the west have taken the position, either in good faith or mischievously, that one can be anti-Zionist and not be anti-Jewish (or anti-Semitic, as most would say). This belief, however, espoused by the extreme Islamist, makes it clear that anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism are one and the same. They call it as they see it. Of course, this introduces all sorts of problems for the leftist who views Zionism as imperialism but claims not to be an anti-Semite. And this is a position many in the US Democratic Party and certainly most of Western Europe have chosen to adopt. It is also a big problem for many left leaning Jews, by the way.

I am reminded of the story of the German jew whose family had been there for hundreds of years, who had prospered and who loved his country, who had fought for his country in WWI. He was secular, and viewed himself first as a German. As he was being prepared to board a train with his family, eventually to arrive at a concentration camp, he said to an SS officer, "how can you do this, I am a German?" To which the Nazi replied, "no you're not, you're a jew." The left leaning, anti Zionist fellow is hated by the Islamist just as much as he hates Ariel Sharon. He would blow them both up in an instant. Unfortunately, when they come to take you away, they won't draw those nice distinctions. It's why one must always be vigilant to fight to defend freedom from people with these states of mind.

Those who express sympathy with these suicide bommbers, Islamists, insurgents, or whatever other language they would like to use, should understand all that such sympathy entails. They must be engaged, fought and destroyed at every turn.
