Iran

There is something bad coming. This new fellow the Mullahs empowered is very bad news. He is an arrogant fascist islamic revolutionary hell-bent on actually confronting the west. And whereas Arab leadership grudgingly respects and fears our removal of Saddam Hussein and our commitment to Iraq as exercises of American power, the Persians are emboldened by the removal of their blood enemy at the border and the ascension of Shiites in Iraq. They certainly are checked by American troops around them, but they may try to "break out" of the encirclement. Putting this new guy in charge suggests the mullahs intend to be aggressive.

We are working with the wrong people in the form of the Europeans to do something, and UN referral is pointless. The Chinese and Indians need to step up with us to put a lid on these guys. The sooner we confront the Iranian reality, the safer we will be. It's not an accident that the Chinese recently made a comment opposing Iranian nuclear armament. Nonetheless, I think this will wind up in hostilities eventually -- when not if. It's just terribly unpredictable. Does Israel preempt? Does Iran attack Israel? Does Iran launch an attack against an Arab nation?

Thoughts?

It would be nice to get a "Raid on the Sun"-type strike on Iran's nuclear facilities from our friends in Israel. Then we could plausibly deny any involvement and keep our focus on Iraq.

I'm not sure our denial would be plausible, at least not in the Arab world. As entertaining as a "raid on the sun" might be -- the Star of David is definitely the best-looking flag in the region -- nobody would believe that we weren't behind it. The question is, would we care?

In any case, I think the Iranians are well-prepared to deal with an attack from Israel, at least insofar as they've hardened and hidden their program. I still think subversion is our best bet.

It's interesting to note the silence from the US administration on Iranian democracy. No doubt it leaves much to be desired. But it goes way beyond the proposed reforms in Eqypt which won lavish praise.

The July 2-8 edition of the Economist contains a more balanced view of the Iranian elections than what you present. An interesting quote "In contrast with pre-revolutionary Iran, the Islamic republic is a partial democracy, and people let off steam on polling day."

... a ship off our coast?! lobbing anything upon us?

Not likely, and more likely an impossibility. First, there'd be a bunch of scumbags in Davy Jones' locker, and second, we have these really nasty war birds that could inflict devastating vengeance upon them.

anonymous.....first and second are both threats, and threats against people dying don't bother people who came to die, or haven't you figured that part out yet?

Do we have something to worry about? Oh, yeah, you bet we do. That's why they have to be hunted down and killed, none of this brought to trial, Gitmo catch-and-release, shame on you stuff. Kill them, and when they try to surrender, kill them efficiently to save bullets, and when there are dead bodies there, fire a hundred rounds or so that you saved that way before you check the bodies. Next patrol. THAT'S the way to solve that problem, let the enemy run out of recruits.
