Saddam relatives captured

Iraqi security forces, acting on tips from residents in Saddam Hussein's hometown, captured two relatives of the former dictator who are accused of helping to finance and carry out attacks, officials said today.

The men, Abdullah Maher Abdul Rashid and his cousin Marwan Taher Abdul Rashid, were captured on March 8 in Tikrit, the Iraqi government said in a statement.

Iraqi officials believe Abdullah Maher Abdul Rashid used large amounts of money from Mr. Hussein's son Qusay, who was his brother-in-law, to finance insurgent attacks, the statement said.

I agree with Rob A., who points out that the proximate cause of the arrests -- "tips from residents" of Tikrit -- is the most interesting news in the story. Amazingly, the Times did not bury it.

The "relatives" and the fact that it was Iraqi forces who conducted the operation. They keep popping up in these kinds of stories.
