Pakistan announces activity against al Qaeda

Pakistan always times announcements of victories against al Qaeda well. In this case, the army raided a house near the Afghanistan border and killed two and captured 11 suspected members of al Qaeda, including "foreigners."

If I were a student of south Asian geopolitics, I would know why Pakistan is suddenly trying to demonstrate that it continues to hunt bin Laden.

No one ever accused me of being the sharpest marble so it doesn't surprise me that I don't get your point on this one Jack.

So let me ask you a question....huh?

My point was incredibly tiny, almost vanishingly so. Pakistan is caught between a rock (the United States) and a hard place (the jihadis and the Islamists at home). It has something of a track record in this war of suddenly looking active when it wants something from the United States, or when it feels pressured by the United States, and then it backs off. For example, it launched its big expedition into the tribal border provinces last year when the United States wratched up its military cooperation with India -- the USAF, for example, flew exercises with the Indian Air Force over Indian air space about a year ago. So given the publicity around this particular operation, I'm wondering why Pakistan feels the need to act all anti al Qaeda?

That's all.

Hmm, maybe the whole Syria situation has something to do with it...

Patton, of course, nailed it with his usual economy of words!

Pakistan falls into the same class of ally as do Egypt and Saudi Arabia - autocratic leadership reluctantly pro-US but eager to stay in power by supporting various anti-US activities by opposition inside. These are the countries where Al Qaeda recruits from and still has active support. We should all wish for the "winds of freedom" sweeping the middle east to also sweep through to Pakistan. Being scared on having an islamist elected governenment is no excuse for supporting tyrants anywhere and as we can see from Iraq, people do not willingly vote for Islamist totatlitarian governments...

Okay, I thought perhaps there was something specific that I was missing. Like say, another Paki that Musharraf is going to have to pardon for peddling nuclear technology.
