The wreckage of my basketball season

Normally I can count on at least one of Princeton and Iowa getting to the Big Dance, which means that my interest in college basketball sustains itself into the second week of March. Not so this year.

Princeton is 1-4 in the Ivy League, and kissed goodbye their last and only shot at a share of the Ivy title last night by blowing an 18 point lead against Penn. And it wasn't just any 18 point lead. It was an 18 point lead in the Palestra with less than 8 minutes to go. SportsProf, who was at the game and issuing commentary from his Blackberry, attributes Penn's victory to its press, which Princeton could not break. Since when is Princeton unable to break a press? Rookie head coach Joe Scott has his work cut out for him.

Meanwhile, the Hawkeyes have dropped three five of their first eight Big Ten games and dismissed their best player so that he can, well, defend himself against some pretty serious accusations. (It says something about the importance of basketball to Iowa that IowaChannel.com actually is conducting a survey to determine whether Iowans agree that Pierre Pierce did "the right thing" by turning himself in. It reflects well on Iowa that 97% of respondants believe that he did.)

At least I'll have a lot of extra time for blogging.

UPDATED: To fix a rather critical typo.
