Two eggs

That's the going rate for sex with a United Nations "peacekeeper" in the Congo.

As Andrew Sullivan and the western media tirelessly point out, American soldiers should not torture people, even in the pursuit of intelligence (avoiding for this post the difficult question of defining torture).

Why does nobody care when the Blue Helmet Brigade commits atrocities in Africa for no reason other than the entertainment of its soldiers? Is it because the Western media so romanticize the United Nations that they do not want to discredit it? Or is it because the United Nations soldiers are victimizing Africans? If neither of these explanations obtains, then what might the reason be?

To start with, you need a fifth estate that hasn't been compromised. And you need an accountable federal government.

Here's another important Canadian, Rex Murphy, a respected political commentator, on a topic that transfixed the nation back in early 1995:

Regarding the fifth estate in the USA, here's a profile of the American for whom I have the most respect, in the context of that very topic:

Seriously, Jack? How open are you to other possibilities?

I could give you a very sad answer, though you may not like it. Maybe it's because it is "only women" (little girls, really, too often...) who are being victimized and it's "only sex".

Our own troops are doing this in Bosnia right now and no one (with the possible exception of the Bush administration) cares.

I'll shut up now before I end up going on a rant. This has always been a sore subject with me, and it will never change.

Fair point. You can always count on the press to not care about the abuse of women. And I'm not saying that just to avoid the rant!
