Nazi gardeners
only three explanations for something like this:
The first and least troubling explanation is that there are Nazi gardeners in Melbourne. That I could deal with, even if I were Jewish and lived in Melbourne. How scary can Nazi gardeners be?
The next most troubling explanation is that vandals came along and rearranged the plants to form a swastika. This is somewhat scarier than open and notorious Nazi gardeners, because vandals that work under cover of darkness are an unquantifiable threat and therefore inherently scarier. Vandals are, almost by definition, worse than gardeners. The Nazi version of the former must be worse than the Nazi version of the latter.
The very most troubling explanation, though, is the one offered by the city fathers of Melbourne. They claim, after due diligence, that perfectly innocent non-Nazi gardeners arranged flowers into a swastika out of ignorance.
Why is mistake the most distressing explanation for this awful arrangement? Because it means that in the span of two generations we are forgetting that which we swore never to forget.
