Font Gate?

Powerline has an interesting thread that raises questions about the authenticity of the National Guard memos that 60 Minutes used to support its most recent story regarding Bush's service in the National Guard. Analysis indicates that the memos were written in a proportional type, and the thread discusses whether National Guard memos from the early 1970s could possibly have been written using the fonts in question. Are they forgeries?

A detailed debate is unfolding here.

Update: The Kerry spot on NRO is picking this up.

Update: This story has taken off, and the mainstream media will have to pick it up soon. The Weekly Standard is reporting on it now, indicating that

A spokeswoman for CBS, Kelly Edwards, said she was overwhelmed with phone
calls and did not respond to specific requests for comment.

The Powerline thread is really unbelievable. CBS and the Globe are going to have massive egg on their faces if these memos are indeed fraudulent.

Allegedly, these memos came from the personal files of Lt.Col. Killian. I have a question: What other memos were in Killian's personal files? Did he keep random memos regarding the countless other people in his command? If so, there would be a large mass of material against which to compare these memos. That would shed a lot of light on their veracity.
