The national debt by presidential term
A useful compendium of the growth of the national debt by presidential term. Suffice it to say there is something there for everybody.
Well, under the Budget Act the president *proposes* the budget, so he gets the first crack as a matter of procedure. What Congress then does is a function of partisanship and leadership.
What is really obvious is how long both parties have added, added and continued to add. Some for this groups and a little more for that union. It's like it a "Culture of Corruption" or something.
Without excusing Reagan, I must point out that he defeated the Soviet Union with dollars and not bullets. Most of us who grew up under the specter of missile induced nuclear destruction never would have dreamed of just outspending the communists. It's too bad out political class didn't realize that something that can't continue forever, wont.
This would be very interesting if Presidents set the budget. Too bad that they do not.
