They were both prisoners of war.

I confess that I wasn't aware that Lidell was a POW until I checked the answer. Upon further thought, the most correct answer would be that they both refused release because of their notoriety, and, willingly, relinquished their position to someone else. A considerable sacrifice on the part of both men.

Edward Lunny makes a good point. Both men had in common a heroic trait that, under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, allowed each of them to put honor and self-sacrifice above their own narrow self-interest.
