What do John McCain and Eric Liddell (the Scottish sprinter whom God "made fast," made famous again in the classic flick Chariots of Fire) have in common?

Now I'll go check out the answer.
I confess that I wasn't aware that Lidell was a POW until I checked the answer. Upon further thought, the most correct answer would be that they both refused release because of their notoriety, and, willingly, relinquished their position to someone else. A considerable sacrifice on the part of both men.

, atEdward Lunny makes a good point. Both men had in common a heroic trait that, under extraordinarily difficult circumstances, allowed each of them to put honor and self-sacrifice above their own narrow self-interest.
