Ranking of states least and most "friendly" to motorists
The results of this study will come as no surprise to people who live in the Garden State.
These state rankings were calculated using seventeen criteria related to specific traffic laws, enforcement practices, and the treatment of traffic ticket defendants. The rankings are designed to provide guidance to travelers who do not want their vacation ruined by speed traps, arcane laws or “kangaroo” traffic courts.
In New Jersey's defense, we note that relative gasoline prices were not among the criteria embedded in the rankings, and we do pretty well in that regard. But still. The longer I live here, the more amazed I am by the incompetence of the governments -- state, municipal, borough, county, and "authority" -- in this state. If it were not for the accident of geography that gives it such structural advantages, New Jersey would be in a world of hurt. As it is, many of the worst aspects of living in New Jersey are of relatively recent vintage -- the fiscal condition of the government has really gone down the tubes only in the last couple of decades -- so the real impact of our political class's irresponsibility and ineptitude is only now materializing. The future is not good.
