Meghan McCain spits into wind, tugs on Superman's cape...

Meghan McCain, John McCain's blogger daughter, decided it would be an excellent idea to pick a fight with Ann Coulter:

In a new blog post for the Daily Beast as Ann Coulter and HBO host Bill Maher are kicking off a week-long debate tour today in New York, McCain calls President Obama “the hippest politician around” and says being a Republican is “about as edgy as Donny Osmond.”

And she blasts Coulter for helping to “perpetuate negative stereotypes” about Republican women. “I straight up don’t understand this woman or her popularity,” says McCain. “I find her offensive, radical, insulting, and confusing all at the same time.”

Meghan, bless her soul, misses the point. However she started out, Ann Coulter, like Bill Maher, has evolved into a political comedian. Anybody who watched her talk at CPAC knows this -- it was a stand-up routine, and not a bad one at that from a particular point of view. Ann's transformation may not be complete, but it is well enough along that we should regard her less as a pundit and more as a comic. That does not mean that she does not have serious things to say -- so does Maher, for example -- but she is ultimately a comedian with a comedian's edge and, increasingly, a comedian's privilege. Taking shots at her for her personality is like complaining about George Carlin for his. And like all comedians, she does not take kindly to hecklers. We almost cringe at the thought of Ann's response.

Of course, a lot more people are going to read McCain's blog as a result...

I've seen you try this "Coulter as political comedian" tactic before. It works on wingnuts already brain-frozen, but no one outside the tribe is buying it, or ever will. What's next--Rush as the GOP's Richard Pryor? LOL

Somehow I don't think Meghan's got anything to worry about. She does have a point, however. Perhaps it's time to take it to heart.

PS you never ran that "The Rock Obama" -Hulk skit from this week's Saturday Night Live.

I see that Meghan has inherited her father's intelligence.

That was meant to be insulting.

Coulter is usually right and Liberals hate to admit it. She describes them exactly and they cringe when they hear it.

Meghan who?

By Anonymous Anonymous, at Tue Mar 10, 09:58:00 AM:

Coulter makes more sense, and is funnier, than K. Olbermann, John Stewart, and, well, just about every liberal I can think of.

And where does it say conservatives can't have an effective attack dog? This weakness is McCains failure.

"McCain calls President Obama 'the hippest politician around'"...

...need I say more? so another supposed "republican-conservative" drinks the liberal dosed kool-aid.

really really sad. so does she admit her father is a good immitation of the Osmond's father?

personally, maybe if the Republican party promoted the values of the Osmonds more often, they might be as popular as the Osmonds used to be (...and still are, for that matter). I also guess this is Meghan's indirect way of throwing dirt at Romney's chances.

really really sad...

...you know why dont these type of Repubs just go and become thug Democrats?

oh and Obama is so "hip & edgy" that he is edging his presidency to the top of the garbage heap of history, with the worst showing of any president ever.

Obama's first 60 days reads like a police blotter of presidential mistakes & lies:

...corrupt cabinet choices abound, mostly due to NOT PAYING TAXES, as well as pay for play scandals, and pro-pornography lobbyists.

...corrupt PORK & WASTE-FILLED bills passed by "hip" Democrats and signed into law by a "hip" edgy Democrat president.

...weakness & ignorance displayed in regards to America's allies & enemies as well as sympathy for terrorist organizations.

...most destruction of the most wealth EVER by a president due to immature, ignorant and socialistic economic policies.

...cutting the military budget in time of war.

...corrupt, lying, unethical & immoral executive actions making the USA one of the world's biggest international abortion & embryonic cell providers & investors.

YEP Meghan, instead of calling Obama a "hipster" you should call him a "HUCKSTER."

Obama has just flushed this great democracy down the toilet. As another edgy & hip politician in Cali by the name of Arnold, has done to his state, so Obama does to our beloved USA.

f*CK EDGY & HIP; give me truth, ethics, small government, low taxes, no pork-filled bills/laws, good strong military, morals & a capitalistic economy anyday. And if thats what Repubs & Conservatives end up standing for, and if that is what turns Meghan off to the party, then she can look eslewhere for sympathy for her ideas.

dont let the door hit you on the way out Meghan. Good by & good riddance.

Ann Coulter a comedian? I have to disagree with you on that. She can be very amusing though. She used to get on my nerves but I've grown to like her by reading her columns. There's nothing wishy washy about her. She's consistent and she seems to be very honest. Meghan McCain is being used by the Liberals just as her father has been.

Sounds more like Meagan is a liberal, just as her father is.

You mention George Carlin in your commentary. Even George made some excellent points about human behavior and condition in his comedy routines. Most good comics do because they are excellent observers. George made comedy (and hyperbole) his medium. So has Ann Coulter. Whether she has crossed the line from observer and commentator to comic is debatable.

Like all girls, Meghan just wants to have fun. She's appealing, albeit annoying when it comes to some of her ideas. Sorta like Annie herself, whose Darwin dissing sticks in my craw.
