A joke

A few years back, this joke rolled around a certain corner of the internets:

A young woman was about to finish her first year of college. She considered herself to be a very liberal Democrat, but her father was a staunch Republican. One day she was challenging her father on his beliefs and his opposition to high taxes and welfare programs.

He stopped her and asked her, "How are you doing in school?"

She answered that she had a 4.0 GPA, but it was really tough. She had to study all the time and ever had time to go out and party. She didn't have time for a boyfriend and didn't really have many college friends because she was spending all her time studying. On top of that, the part-time job her father insisted she keep left absolutely no time for anything else.

He asked, "How is your friend Mary?"

She replied that Mary was barely getting by. She had a 2.0 GPA, never studied, but was very popular on campus, didn't have a job, and went to all the parties. She was always complaining about not having any money, but didn't want to work. Why, she often didn't show up for classes because she was hung over.

Dad then asked his daughter why she didn't go to the Dean's office and request that 1.0 be taken off her 4.0 and given it to her friend who only had a 2.0. That way they would both have a respectable 3.0 GPA. Then, she could also give her friend half the money she'd earned from her job so that her friend would no longer be broke.

The daughter angrily fired back, "That wouldn't be fair. I worked really hard for my grades and money, and Mary just loafs. Why should her laziness and irresponsibility be rewarded with half of what I've worked for?"

The father slowly smiled and said, "Welcome to the Republican Party!"

In the movie version, Alec Baldwin should play the daughter.

Democrats only have two problems with the concept of "Work Ethic"

Work....and Ethics.....

Aha, so the people that Liberals want to help are usually unworthy louts that would be just fine if they would just brush off and work hard, the lazy bastards. The argument is that bad things (badly timed downsizing, disease, hurricane) can happen to anyone, and therefore that everyone should be willing to spare a small amount for the insurance that they themselves would receive in case of misfortune. If I wanted to make a characterization as fair as yours, I would use your Republican affiliation to tar you as a theocratic, nativist bigot who thinks that a first qualification toward a job is to be a "good American" = Republican. TH, if I do say so myself, you're sounding like an intentionally ignorant partisan hack.

Of course, Fnord, the joke was nothing but a setup for the Alec Baldwin link, which you conveniently ignored.

During the Great Depression, a young teenage boy was hitch-hiking down the road.
A big sedan came by, and the guy driving it asked the boy,"Are you a Democrat or Republican?"
To which the boy answered,"A Democrat!". And the sedan sped away.
A few minutes later another car came by and stopped, with the driver leaning out and asking the boy, "Are you a Republican or a Democrat?"
To which the boy answered."I'm a Democrat!" and that car sped away too.
A few minutes later, a convertible came by, driven by a beautiful blond. She stopped and asked the boy,"Are you a Democrat or a Republican?"
The boy was a quick learner, after all, and said, "A Republican!"
The pretty girl smiled and said,"Well hop in, then." And the boy did.
The convertible sped away down the road. With the wind blowing in the car, the young woman's dress blew up, showing a lot of leg. She gave the young boy a big smile as they sped along.
"Gee whiz!" he exclaimed."I've only been a Republican for 10 minutes and I already feel like screwing somebody!"

And that should be more politically correct for all the scolds out there.
Funny how people's ideas start to slip when it's their ox being gored.

@ Fnord

I know libs love "grey zones", (being chronically embarrassed to have an actual opinion)...but let's just presume for the purpose of argument that the country divides itself geographically between conservative Republican states and Liberal Democrat states (give Obama another couple of years and it may be more than theorettical).

Where would you want to live if you were unemployed?

Well, I suspect you will probably say..."Of course, the Democratic states...we will have unemployment insurance, mortgage bailouts, food stamps, welfare for the needy, no guns, no military, mo borders and legal drugs!"

Of course, Fnord, what you would *NOT* have is ANYBODY TO PAY FOR IT!!!

Me, I take my chances with the group that gives the most to charity, has more job oppotunities, a fair tax culture and law & order.

But that's just the bigot in me...

The new movie 'Dillinger' was filmed here last year and we have 'tax breaks' for the industry.

In a report from the State a month back the state paid back the producers 99%+ of the money they spent here.

The producers, in essence, submitted an expense report and my fair state reimbursed them hundreds of thousands of dollars.

So...were did we come out ahead?
