TigerHawk TV: All Saint's Day, annual Garcia y Vega cigar edition

My father's birthday was November 1. I have remembered him annually in the ten years since he died by smoking a Garcia y Vega cigar, and in the last four years I have written a blog post. Well, today's edition of TigerHawk TV -- as always, unedited and unrehearsed! -- is dedicated to my father, who would have had a great many interesting things to say about the current election.

Yes, in the middle there I had to choke down a burp. The lesson: don't do videos after eating a calzone and drinking a large Diet Coke.

Three years ago, two years ago, and last year.

My condolences and as a tribute to your Father, who after listening to you video, I am certain is looking down with a smile on his face let me relate some surprising news from Iowa

The Cedar Rapids Gazette just endorced the REPUBLICAN candidate for Congress in the 2cd district, who is running against the Democrat who defeated Jim Leach in 2006 51.3 percent to 48.6 percent.

That is profound considering Linn County is 75% Democrat and 25% Republican

I got the news in an email here is the text of the announcement

2nd District: Miller-Meeks
Dave Loebsack, a Democrat from Mount Vernon, also is seeking a second term. Loebsack has worked hard, especially on higher education, veterans and renewable-energy issues. He’s done his share of lobbying to secure disaster aid for Iowa, coordinating with Grassley on the valuable tax credits portion of the disaster-relief act. He’s thoughtful and has improved his understanding of foreign policy issues.

We were pretty comfortable with endorsing Loebsack for a second term ...

until we met Mariannette Miller-Meeks. The dynamo Ottumwa Republican physician and military veteran, who entered college at age 16, runs a small business and has been president of the Iowa Medical Society and a university professor.

She impressed us with her command of key issues and a track record that proves she gets things done.

Congress needs to reform many things, especially its inability to say “no” to requests and programs that can’t be funded without more taxpayer debt. We believe Miller-Meeks is more likely to make that happen.

Her health care insurance proposal looks more realistic than either of the presidential candidates’ plans and doesn’t resort to a governmentfunded universal plan that could burden taxpayers and discourage medical treatment innovation. She offers detailed proposals on reforming Social Security, improving the GI Bill and revising the tax code and wisely recognizes how energy, environment, national security and the economy are all interrelated.

Miller-Meeks is smart, driven — and well-qualified to become Iowa’s first woman elected to Congress.

You know, we continually hear how Bush's low approval rating is affecting this election, but we hear little about how or if The Pelosi/Reid Congresses even lower indeed lowest approval rating since polling begain will influence the election.

Now granted there may be some Electoral Hysterisis, but this event here, may be duplicated elsewhere, one hopes

Back home, my buddies and I refer to cheap cigars as "hot rats" and your annual hot rat tribute to the Tigerhawk dad is a an excellent one. Your pop sounds like my kind of guy and I'm sure he would have gotten along famously with my late, sainted mother - a classic Reagan Democrat who graduated from Iowa (Journalism '41) where she had a class with all-time Hawkeye icon Nile Kinnick. She returned to the donks in '88 because in her words at the time "George Bush is a wimp!". While her assessment was 100% spot-on, I never did ask mom what made her see Gov. Dukakis as the John Wayne candidate in that race.

Thanks for that.

It is the first All Saints Day without my dad. Your post had me bringing up all kinds of great memories. My dad was a Democrat for years, until he got tired of the Socialism and Racism and moved over to the party of Lincoln. As it turns out, he blazed the trail for dozens and dozens of our family to leave behind the Jim Crow Democrats, forever.
