My oh-so sophisticated schadenfreude
This part is laugh-out-loud funny:
My own theory is that the US has never quite grasped the give-and-take character of world sport. Countries devoted to soccer, cricket and rugby play regular international fixtures; they win some and lose some, and learn to live with that. The biggest US sports (American football, baseball, basketball) are particularly their own and primarily domestic. Neither their athletes nor spectators are well-prepared for the Olympics.
Yes, an excellent theory, supported empirically by the behavior of European fans at World Cup and tennis matches around the world.
Whatever he put in his tea, I'd like some.

The whole column is beyond weird, insofar as he does not cite any actual examples of bad behavior on the part of American fans.

That's because it's faith-based.

Wow.
I think our biggest fault is the inability to settle for anything but the success. It kind of makes me glad that there are those that are both resigned and happy to be losers.
The US won more medals at the Olympcs than any other country. They won more medals than counries with three times the population of the US. Imagine how much better they would have performed if only they could have been better prepared.
