Olympic pollution

Regarding the air in Beijing, the Chinese and the IOC are beginning to panic.

Even with the degree of conditioning, I expect the sprinters will be off a fraction of a step.

I'd hate to have to run a marathon in brown air.

And ... one wonders about the quality of construction for those huge and very modern venues. They look great, but let's hope they're built to world standards and not China's.

The structural quality of construction will undoubtedly be atrocious. These buildings only need to hold together for a few weeks. They could crumble into dust next year and nobody would pay any attention.

Interesting conclusion, though:

"Maybe the resourceful Chinese can turn things around by August 8, but I wouldn't hold your breath."

Gee; that's precisely what I was planning on doing, too.

Gee, maybe the Chinese could just stop burning oil and coal for awhile...oh, that's right, they are a "developing nation," so AlGore and the enviro-fascists give them a free pass on the amount of pollutants and carbon they spew into the atmosphere. Didn't I read somewhere that China had just surpassed the eeevil US in their carbon footprint?

Does anyone know if they ever got the algae bloom cleaned up?

This could be a PR disaster for the Chinese. For years we've been hearing dueling messages about how awesome China is, and how the big bad Americans are such huge polluters.

By the way I don't believe for a minute that we're a close second in CO2 emissions. I mean, I've never seen such awful pollution.

To feeblemind,

NY Times, 16 Jul 08: "Efforts to clean up large amounts of green algae from the coastal city of Qingdao were successful, an official said."
