The "American Idol" finale

I have only a passing interest in "American Idol," having seen at most five of the shows since they got down to the final 12. Generally, I found it to be a mildly amusing show. The finale, though, sucked a transporting suckage. I just wanted it to end, and only my 192 unread emails prevented me from draining my wine glass and hitting the hay long before we learned that Cook was the, er, "winner."

For all the sins it commits, we must remember to thank American Idol for giving this nation Carrie Underwood, an ultra-sweet little blonde who can really sing it. My wife is Jewish, but even she loves Ms. Underwood's "Jesus Take the Wheel". This Okie cutie with an abundant talent and a penchant for singing positive material (i.e. "Wasted" where she really belts it out) more than offsets the American music industry's having foisted Madonna, Britney Spears, and uber-skank Christina Aguilera on us.

What, you missed frontline for that?

Jack Black playing one of Gladys Knight's three Pips was hilarious. As was my eight year-old, who asked "What's a face lift?" when Donna Summer appeared.

Other than that, the show was pretty bad. David Cook can bring it, though.
