The misunderstood convenience of unencumbered presidential power
It's not that the president exercises unilateral power without Congressional action, it's what he exercises it for.

I seem to remember recently the Left having a fit about Bush suspending a number of regulations in order to accelerate the building of the border fencing (such as it is) also.
The only unrestricted power of the President that I remember, is the power of the pardon, which once issued is the ultimate "Get Out Of Jail Free" card, although I would support the suspension of said power for the 100 days previous to each President's end of term due to some recent misuse.
