In what I expect to be by far our toughest mystery photo ever, identify the ruin pictured below with as much specificity as you can muster:

The 'eagle' heads and the way in which the walls are buttressed are good clues, but incomplete for me. I suspect someone with more medieval history or earlier might guess. Has to be medieval, I think (at least what I think as medieval). No visible moss as well. Odd.

Chichen Itza, definitely. Temple of the Serpents, maybe?

Is there a reward? Free beer?

We have a winner! Andrew, the prize is the same as always -- huge esteem and great glory among some of the smartest readers in the blogosphere.

But I'm sure that if I knew which of my many "Andrew" friends you were, I would also be delighted to buy you a beer.

Looks like the type of place where AL GORE and the eco-wackos sit around going OOOMMM OOOMMM OOMMM while meditating on their nature spirits they worship

For the most fascinating, in-depth look you'll ever have into these times, read "Aztec" by Gary Jennings. Written in first person, the research that went into this thing is beyond astounding.

Damnation, Andrew beat me to it.

I thought Chichen Itza was Mayan?

It is. But we have learned not to call out Dr. Mercury, else he lay one of those enormous, link-filled, mocking comments on us!
