Naval porn

I was fortunate to have dinner the other night with Norman Friedman, the author of numerous books on navies and naval power. His new book, Naval Firepower: Battleship Guns and Gunnery in the Dreadnaught Era, is incredibly cool, at least if you get excited looking at military hardware (which I most certainly do -- one of the many reasons I am unqualified to serve in Congress). Anyway, I had a chance to page through it and gaze on its photographs and other illustrations, and have already ordered my own copy. Order your own by clicking below!

On the contrary, many members of Congress get quite excited when looking at military hardware...when it is manufactured in their district.

I have read a lot of what Norman Friedman has written on warships and warship design.

I am green with envy.

A battleship is an awesome thing. My Dad was on the New Jersey during Vietnam. I still remember clambering all over her as a girl while he lectured me about boilers, bilges and the like. Amazing stuff.

Echoing the chap above, "green with envy". Friedman's one of the greats of warship history, up there with John Roberts and D.K. Brown (both of whom I've had the pleasure of meeting).

How does one have dinner with such a man anyway?
